A 27-year-old individual from Elkin passed away early Wednesday following a collision involving a semi-truck in Iredell County, reported the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Officers were dispatched to the accident scene on Interstate 77 close to exit 52 for I-40. Preliminary investigations indicated that a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse being operated by 27-year-old Jared Quincey Nelson was moving southbound on I-77 when it crashed into a detached 2011 Volvo tractor without a trailer hitched. This impact caused the truck to subsequently hit a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe.
Nelson died at the scene. The driver of the Volvo received minor injuries and the driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.
The State Highway Patrol suggests that high speeds seem to have played a key role in causing the accident.
