Volkswagen firmly holds the lead in Germany’s electric vehicle sector following a drop in sales for its American competitor, Tesla.

Vehicles from the Volkswagen group lead the new registration statistics released by Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) for the initial three months of this year.

At present, only BMW can match the pace, whereas the previous frontrunner Tesla has dropped to eighth position.

Between January and March, the KBA documented a total of 112,968 new registrations for all-electric vehicles.

The top spot clearly goes to the VW brand with 25,393 registrations, trailed closely by BMW with 10,315. Following behind these two leaders are three Volkswagen-owned brands: Skoda with 9,258, Audi with 8,634, and Seat with 8,063 new registrations respectively.

The sixth spot belongs to Mercedes with 7,090 vehicles, followed by Hyundai with 5,316. Tesla ranks eighth with just 4,935 cars sold.

Last year during the same time frame, despite the termination of the environmental bonus, Tesla still held the top spot and ended up in third position overall.

This year includes some special changes as well. Many producers have delayed the registration of new electric vehicles from 2024 to 2025, making it simpler for them to meet the tougher CO2 emission standards set for their fleets.

Furthermore, Tesla probably faced setbacks not just due to the political actions of CEO Elon Musk but also because of the recent update to the Model Y.
