To demonstrate that solar-driven transportation isn’t merely a futuristic idea, a three-wheeled electric vehicle successfully finished its maiden cross-country journey partly fueled by sunlight.

The US-based company Aptera claims that its two-seat electric vehicle managed to travel a distance of 480 kilometers, thanks to an extension in its range through solar power. This achievement illustrates that solar-powered vehicles are more than just concepts and represent a viable technology available today.

Out of the total 480 kilometers journey along the Route 66 highway in the U.S., 32 kilometers were powered exclusively by sunlight, according to Aptera. The company also mentioned that the peak output of their solar technology reached up to 520 watt-hours during movement.

The 32 kilometers of solar power might suffice for a brief trip to the store, yet Aptera remains optimistic about extracting greater distances from its dolphin-inspired Aptera Hermes prototype through sunlight alone.

The potential for solar power to increase the range of electric vehicles might also assist in alleviating the persistent concern many motorists have about depleting their battery charge while driving an electric car.

Co-CEO Steve Fambro, accompanied by a small team, embarked on a journey across the southwestern United States using the Aptera vehicle. They started their trip from Flagstaff, Arizona—a quaint town nestled among snow-capped mountains—where the car had already harnessed 300 watts of solar power even as the day commenced.

"It’s sort of an unconventional route," Fambro remarked. "That’s why we decided to go with this approach." Aptera is a U.S.-based car company funded by the public, located in Carlsbad, California.

The production variant made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas during January. By then, the brand had amassed 50,000 refundable deposits of $100 each globally for their initial model. The firm intends to commence assembly operations within this year.
