The expansion project for Interstate-94 between Albertville and Monticello, which spans three years, enters its second year this week.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) stated that teams will start working on Tuesday, April 8, on what’s referred to as the "gap project." This initiative aims to widen I-94 to include six lanes for improved traffic flow.
This year, MnDOT plans to widen the westbound I-94 to three lanes, extending from Wright County Road 37 in Albertville all the way to just past Highway 25 in Monticello.
Starting Tuesday, drivers will encounter intermittent single-lane closures in both directions of the highway as teams prepare the construction area.
Beginning April 14 and continuing until early or mid-November, I-94 will stay accessible with two lanes in each direction on the nearby eastbound part while workers focus on the westbound section.
The significant construction for the $76 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

As per MNDOT’s plan, the complete project encompasses the following enhancements:
- Resurfacing of the roadway.
- The inclusion of an extra westbound lane starting from County Road 37 in Albertville to just west of Highway 25 in Monticello.
- The inclusion of an extra eastbound lane starting from west of Highway 25 in Monticello extending to County Road 19 in Albertville.
- Substitution of the westbound bridge crossing Wright County Road 19 in Albertville.
- Expansion of the western bridge across County Road 75 in Monticello.
- The substitution or fixing of underground piping.
- The setup of two sound barriers alongside Interstate 94 in the Monticello region.
This initiative aims to prolong the lifespan of the highway, accommodate population expansion, decrease traffic jams, foster economic progress, and additional goals.
