New York Times Puzzles for today (puzzle 401) - solutions

The solutions for today's Strands, game number 401, are...

  • GRAVITY
  • ARRIVAL
  • DUNE
  • ALIEN
  • MEGALOPOLIS
  • SPANGRAM: SCIENCE FICTION
  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

Oddly enough, I received the Spangram first today.

It had a touch of the classic magic trick where a magician takes out a handkerchief from his pocket and more colorful cloths keeps coming up. This might be due to the fact that today’s yellow serpent displayed the word "SCIENCE FICTION," stretching all the way across to the top, which gave off an eerie and extraterrestrial vibe, as though it were defying the laws of time and space. Or at least, that's how it seemed.

Regardless, it was delightful to revisit these sci-fi classics – along with MEGALOPOLIS.

This list also features two films helmed by the exceptional director Denis Villeneuve — ARRIVAL and DUNE (though, the creators might have had in mind the David Lynch version instead).

I strongly suggest finding the short story that inspired "ARRIVAL." Story of Your Life By Ted Chiang. Similar to his other tales, this one unfolds and lingers with a distinctive quality—much like today’s pangrams.
